International Homeless Animals Day
A day to raise awareness on the overpopulation of dogs and cats.
International Homeless Animals Day is a day to spread awareness on pet overpopulation. There is an incredible overpopulation of dogs and cats worldwide, which leads to so many dogs and cats becoming homeless. This day is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday of August each year.

Spay/Neuter Your Pet
Shelters can become overpopulated so easily. Right now, we are even strguggling to find space for all of the animals that need safe shelter. At the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, one of our biggest goals is to spay and neuter every pet. Think about it, one female cat can have up to 3 litters of kittens every year with an average of 4 kittens each birth. Cats are able to reproduce for 12-15 years, meaning one single female cat could potentially have more than 150 kittens in her lifetime. That is why we truly believe it is so important to spay and neuter your pets.
Donate to a Shelter
The Humane Society of St. Lucie County does so much more than just adopt out animals. We tend to those animals and try to give them their best chance. We treat them medically, including spaying or neutering them, we give them proper diets, we even have a trainer come and try to help our dogs with behavior concerns. Shelters around the world have played a huge role in mitigating the overpopulation of dogs and cats. We could always use any support you have to offer, even if it isn’t a fiscal donation, donate your time and volunteer with the dogs and cats!

Adopt or Foster a Shelter Pet
So many shelters are reaching or have reached their maximum capacity, give a lucky dog or cat the chance at a better life by opening up your home. If adoption is something that you aren’t quite ready for, then consider fostering! Fostering an animal makes more of a difference than you could ever imagine. We have many dogs and kittens who would benefit tremendously by having a foster home.
