What to Do If You Find Kittens
Understanding the Best Steps for Kitten Care
Finding kittens can be both heartwarming and concerning. Knowing how to handle the situation can greatly impact their well-being. Here’s a guide on what to do if you come across kittens:
0-6 Week Old Kittens:
If you stumble upon kittens who appear to be 0-6 weeks old, it’s essential not to “kit-nap” them immediately. Kittens of this age are often still being cared for by their mother. The best course of action is to leave them be and monitor the situation.
Wait and Watch:
Wait for up to 8 hours to see if the mother returns. The mother cat is the kittens’ best chance for survival, as she provides essential care, including warmth and nourishment. Monitoring from a distance allows you to determine if the mother is still caring for them.
Contact the Humane Society:
If after 8 hours, it’s confirmed that the mother is no longer around, it’s time to take action. Contact the Humane Society of St. Lucie County at 772-238-5631 for assistance. Our knowledgeable staff can provide guidance and support in ensuring the kittens’ well-being.
Kittens Over 6 Weeks Old:
For kittens over 6 weeks old, your safety should be a priority. Approach cautiously and avoid picking up kittens unless they are clearly friendly and approachable. If the kittens seem friendly, contact Port St. Lucie Animal Control directly at 772-871-5042 for assistance.
Ensuring the well-being of kittens you find is essential for their health and safety. By following these guidelines, you can help provide the best possible outcome for these vulnerable animals.
Availability and Assistance:
The Humane Society is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM. If you require assistance outside of these hours, please reach out to Port St. Lucie Animal Control. However, it’s important to note that you should only contact PSL Animal Control if the kittens are found within the city limits of Port St. Lucie. You can reach them at 772-871-5042.
